Vision

The  National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programme in Environmental Health Science is designed to produce Environmental Health personnel who will be able to organize and ensure healthy environment in homes, communities and work places; thereby bequeathing to the public a sustainable level of health to enable them
live and perform optimally in their community.

Mission

To Produce a certified EHO apart from establishing his own private practice in any
of the subspecialties of Environmental Health, also to have a great potential and
opportunity to be employed to work in the: Public sector at all levels with Ministries of Health, Environment, Agriculture, Water Resources, defence (Army, Navy & Air force),
Prison Service, Customs Service, Immigration, Police Force Environmental protection agencies, waste management Authority, urban and regional planning, primary health care agencies, etc;
Private sector with oil companies, banks hospitality industries, private Environmental Health service providers, waste management facilities,
etc; To lead in the formulation of Environmental Health Related Policies in Ecosystem Health and Safeguarding Public Health

SIGNIFICANCE

Globally, the functions of an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) include Waste
Management, Food Hygiene and Control, Pest and Vector Control, Environmental
Health Control of Housing and Sanitation, Epidemiological investigation and
Control, Air quality Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Water resources
Management and Sanitation, Noise control, Protection of Recreational Environment,
Radiation Control and Health, Control of Frontiers, Air, Sea Ports and Border
crossing, Pollution Control and abatement, educational activities i.e. Health/
Hygienic Education and Promotion, Promotion and Enforcement of Environmental
Health quality standards, Collaborative efforts to study the effects of Environmental
Hazards and Environmental Health Impact Assessment.

BACKGROUND OF THE DEPARTMENT

Historically, the Department of Environmental Health Sciences is first in
Nigeria and possibly in West Africa. Environmental Health, according to the World
Health Organization is a specialized discipline in Public Health that is responsible
for the ‘Prevention of Diseases and Safeguarding of the Health of populations by
ensuring and providing Safe and Quality environmental conditions’. This discipline
is thus very strategic in the realization of the Millennium Development Goals
(MDG’s) and Sustainable Development (SD) which are key United Nations Social,
Environment and Health issues. In order to provide the required enabling
environment for qualitative training of students and for staff development, research,
teaching and community service programmes are geared towards local and global
components.  The origin and growth of Environmental Health Sciences at College of Health
Michika dates back to 1975. Environmental Health was one of the areas of emphasis
in the then Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM),one of the 2
foundation Departments of the College. In 1975, the Head of Department was
appointed to pilot the affairs of the Department. The department started with 15
students from different parts of the country. Currently the department offered the
followings courses
1. ND. Environmental Health Technology
2. ND. Environmental Health Technician
3. ND. Food Hygiene 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The minimum entry requirement into the National Diploma in Environmental Health
Science programme is five (5) credit passes in the Senior Secondary School
Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Examination Council (NECO) or General
Certificate in Education (GCE) ordinary level at not more than two (2) sittings, their
equivalent. The subjects must include English Language, Mathematics,
Biology/Health/Agricultural Science, Chemistry and any one from the following:
Geography, Economics, Food and Nutrition, Physics, Technical Drawing.
